How to Get Rid of Bats: Bat Removal & Control in Illinois

flying bat

Being the only mammal, not only  in Illinois but in the world that can fly deserves respect. Especially when bats are on duty 7 days a week eating almost their body weight in mosquitoes to keep you less itchy when your trying to enjoy a summer night outdoors. There are over 3 dozen bat species in the United States,  some bats live right in your home town. Bats have very poor eye sight and are small so bats need to stay safe during the day, sometimes this means bats in your attic or bats in your chimney. Although you may feel intruded upon they are just looking for a place to be safe and should properly be relocated to another area with out being harmed.

Illinois Bat Hazards
Bats just like raccoons and skunks, can contract rabies. To be truthful about bats, they are a rabies carrier however  the percentage of bats that actually have it is minuscule.  The reason the hype of bats with rabies is so large is because it still is a threat to humans and the majority of people know so little about bats that is usually just the warnings that stick in their mind. Just try and keep your distance and I will bet they will do the same. Histoplasmosis is a disease from Histoplasma capsulatum spores that are airborne and are present in bat guano. Histoplasmosis can be inhaled and is a cause of lung disease in humans. Bat guano falls apart very easily at the lightest touch and one the fungal spores are pushed into the air with a wind of dust inhaling the dangerous spores is very possible. Since the clean up and removal of bat guano has a very specific protocol for safely extracting the contaminated fecal matter, guano removal should only be done by bat control professionals.Bat bugs are something in the order of bed bugs, being able to infest beds, human hair and clothing if not properly exterminated by a bat bug specific solution they will spread in a home. Bat bugs although like bed bugs will not take to bed bug removal treatments and must be specifically dealt with.

Illinois Bat Damage

I’ve never met a homeowner that has spent hundreds of thousands on a home and didn’t mind the loss of value from urine stains on roofs or ceilings, bat guano stains, smell and disease in their attic or screaming bats inside a chimney.
Most of the time when Illinois bat removal is needed bat young are still unable to leave on their own and are in nursing stages. For this reason home bat removal is done at the end of August when young bats begin to fly out on their own.  Most bats like to enter up high in soffits, vents, attic fans, eves, chimney creases etc. However the occasional bat removal need can be just a bat that lost his way and ended up on the wrong side of a door.

Illinois bats: Beautiful or beast?
Bats are all night loving creatures, the size of Illinois bats vary from little brown bats to big brown bats. Some bats have a wing spread of up to a foot long. They dine on insects all night long, lactating females can eat up to their body weight in insects in one night. Bats like to breed when the weather begins to cool. Maternity colonies form with pregnant bats until the bats are born in spring. The baby bats nurse and will begin to fly on their own several weeks after birth.
The largest bat colonies are usually found in isolated areas always close to water, little brown bats are colony orientated while big brown bats tend to be solitary. Little brown bats are seasonal home guests,  big brown bats will enter a buildings and stay all year if allowed to.
Lots of bat organizations have information posted on the web should you get a bat visitor in your home, you can safely remove it without harming the bat. When we start a bat removal process on a home we start by finding all entry points and placing one way valve systems that allow bats to leave yet not re-enter the structure (with season permitting and young able to fly). Once these bat excluders have done the intended bat removal purpose all the holes are then closed and sealed to eliminate future bats from entering.

Illinois bat extermination
Bat Extermination by definition is illegal, killing bats is an offense as well as un-ethical. Putting out poisons is ineffective and a special pest control license is mandatory to dispense toxic pesticides. Bat repellents are also ineffective to bats. Exclusion and repair is the only guaranteed measure to bat removal.
